In this tutorial, I’ll show you exactly how to build a quick funk patch on any guitar processor in just 3 simple steps. NUX MG30 users can download the patch file and others can replicate the fx settings and signal chain.
What Makes a Funk Tone?
Funk guitar tone is all about:
- Tight low end
- Snappy mids
- Crisp, shimmering highs
- And most importantly… rhythmic clarity
Whether you’re comping with 9th chords or chicken-picking muted 16th notes, your tone should sit in the pocket without getting muddy or harsh.
3-Step Funk Patch Breakdown
Step 1: Amp + Cab
- Amp: Choose a bright, clean and glassy amp like Super Reverb.
- Cab: Add a matching cabinet; a 4×10 cabinet goes well.
- Settings Tip: Keep gain low, volume up, treble around 6–7, and presence on.
Step 2: Compressor
- Why: Compression adds punch and consistency, especially for rhythmic playing.
- Settings Tip:
- Sustain: Low to medium
- Attack: Fast
- Level: Match your clean level or slightly boosted
Step 3: Chorus
- Why: A subtle chorus gives your tone that classic ’80s funk shimmer — without washing it out.
- Settings Tip:
- Depth: Low to moderate
- Rate: Slow
- Mix: Around 30–40%
Tips:
- Add auto-wah or envelope filter after the compressor for even more funk flavors.
- Use pickup position 2 or 4 on a Strat for the perfect quack.
- Keep your picking hand tight and try using light muting to bring out rhythmic funk textures.
